Makaton and MyChoicePad with acquired communication needs

There are a growing number of clinicians using Makaton with clients with dementia or acquired aphasia (language difficulties following a stroke or traumatic brain injury). Approximately 80% of people that have had a stroke have hemiparesis; one sided weakness so signing can sometimes be difficult but there is a guide to using one handed signing for Makaton tutors working with this client group.

Using Makaton signing and symbols can help with the understanding of language and with expression.

I absolutely love this video case study of Speech and language therapist Nicola Hayton using Makaton and MyChoicePad to support clients with expressive and receptive aphasia so thought I would share it!
