Afasic ‘Voice For Life’

On Saturday 13th September I delivered a Makaton Taster workshop to parents of children with SLCN (speech, language and communication needs).

Other speakers at the event included Libby Hill from ‘Small Talk’ a speech and language therapy practice in Staffordshire and Abigail Beverley from Afasic’s youth project. Both talks were really interesting and inspiring – it was really interesting to hear about the work that Libby does at Small Talk, she gave lots of practical advice about simplifying problems and getting down to grass roots. Abby’s talk was about how she felt growing up with a language disorder and what has worked for her (or not!)

It was not only the professional talks that were inspiring –  meeting the parents of young people in Shropshire was great! Although they have had to overcome many obstacles and are constantly fighting for the right services, the practical strategies that they had all developed were amazing!! They all found the day helpful and are hopefully going to try and form a ‘parents group’ which would be fantastic.

Take a look at the Afasic website to see how you could get involved http://www.afasic.org.uk/

The taster went well and everyone loved learning the signs I had selected. They also enjoyed a quick demo of MyChoicePad.
